Marcus found the footage cleaning out his hard drives. That’s how it started — not with me, not with my wife, but with a wedding videographer in another state doing digital housekeeping on a Sunday, coming across our wedding from eight years back, and noticing something in the raw footage he’d never used. Something that … Read more
Some secrets are too heavy to take with you. I think that’s what happened. I think Eleanor got to the edge of her life, looked at what she was carrying, and decided she couldn’t cross over still holding it. So she handed it to me instead. Three days before she died, in a hospice room … Read more
The phone rang at 9:40 on a Wednesday night. Unknown number, local area code. I almost let it go to voicemail. I wish, some days, that I had. Most days I’m glad I didn’t. That’s the thing about the truth — you can want it and dread it in exactly equal amounts, and the wanting … Read more
I bought us matching Fitbits for our anniversary. That’s the detail I keep coming back to. I bought them. It was my idea. “We’ll do the step-count thing together, keep each other honest, get healthy before forty.” She thought it was sweet. I thought it was sweet. I set them both up, linked them, because … Read more
You know that thing your phone does. Where Google Photos, out of nowhere, makes you a little slideshow. “One year ago today.” “Your trip to the mountains.” It stitches your pictures together with soft music and calls it a Memory, and usually it’s nice, usually it’s your kid’s birthday or some vacation, and you smile … Read more

It was a Tuesday in April, sunny, mid-sixties, and I was standing in the parking lot of a strip-mall hardware store in Greenville, South Carolina, waiting to get a key … Read more
I need to tell you about the photo. Not because it’s the worst part — it isn’t. But because it’s the moment my life split cleanly into a before and an after, and I can still see it when I close my eyes. It was a Tuesday night. October. I was lying in bed next … Read more
She says it only happened once. Maybe that’s true. Maybe it isn’t. But sitting underneath that sentence is the question you’re actually trying to answer, the one that will shape every decision you make from here: what kind of problem do I have? Because a one-night stand and a long-term affair are not the same … Read more
We bought the baby monitor for our daughter. That’s the whole reason it existed — a little camera on a shelf in the nursery so we could watch Emma sleep from our phones, check on her during naps, hear her when she woke up. A three-hundred-dollar peace-of-mind device that every parent of a newborn buys … Read more
